Open Championship 2024 Exemptions

New Open Exemption Rules for 2024

Big Changes Coming to the Open Championship Exemption Categories

Impactful Storytelling About Upcoming News Article

The Royal & Ancient Golf Club (R&A) has announced significant changes to the exemption categories for future Open Championships, starting with the 2024 tournament at Royal Troon. These changes will have a lasting impact far beyond this year's event.

From 2024, players winning The Open will be exempt until the age of 55. This is a significant change from the current rule, which grants exemptions for five years after a player's victory. All golfers currently exempt as past Champions will also be able to play in the Open.

The Open Championship field is typically comprised of a mix of tour pros and amateurs. Fully exempt players are those who have won The Open in the past, or who have earned a place in the field through their performance in other major golf tournaments. The new exemption rules will make it easier for past Champions to continue playing in the Open, and they will also give more opportunities to amateur golfers to qualify for the championship.
